If you’re looking for a unique and stylish companion, an American Curl may be exactly what you need.

In 1986, The International Cat Association (TICA) accepted the American Curl into the registry with Champion status. Five years later, the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) also recognized the breed. The American Cat Fanciers Association (AFCA) also registers American Curls.

The iconic American Curl was first discovered in California during the 1980s, when two talented fanciers stumbled across a litter of Domestic Shorthairs and Longhairs that had the unique trait of curled ears – different from the Scottish Folds. After much deliberation and research, the American Curl was officially welcomed into the family of registered breeds by the International Cat Association (TICA) in 1986. Not long after, in 1991, the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) and the American Cat Fanciers Association (AFCA) both gave their stamp of approval to the breed.

What Do American Curl Cats Look Like?

Kittens of this breed come into the world with straight ears that begin to curl back within a week of being born – but don’t get too excited yet! The curl isn’t permanent until they are about 5 months old, so you’ll have to wait a bit before you can show off your kitty’s hairdo.

These cats also come in a variety of shapes and sizes, due to outcrossing with Domestic Shorthairs and Longhairs, which helps to diversify the gene pool. Plus, American Curls come in almost every color and pattern, so you can find the perfect fur baby to add to your family.

Curl Ears

The American Curl’s ears are not just aesthetically pleasing, they also play an important role in the breed’s overall health. The curled ears act as a buffer for sound, helping to protect the cat’s sensitive hearing. The ear curl also helps to keep the cat’s inner ear clean, since the curl helps to keep dirt and debris from entering the ear canal.

The American Curl cat is a medium-sized breed of feline, typically weighing between 5 and 10 pounds. They are known for their unique ears which curl back, giving them a distinctively cute appearance. They are most commonly seen in shades of white and brown, but can also be found in a variety of other colors including black, grey, and tabby.

They are very social and love to be around people, but can also do well with other cats and sometimes even small dogs.

These furry felines are bundles of joy! They are full of life and love to play, run, and explore – they can even learn lots of fun tricks with patience and practice. They are social butterflies and adore human companionship, but can also do great with other cats and even small dogs.
