Window treatments are an essential part of any home, providing a perfect balance of privacy, light control, and decoration. However, it can be a challenge to keep them clean and fresh, especially if you have pets. This post is all about cleaning your window coverings in a pet-friendly home.

Cats, dogs, and other critters can shed hair and dander all over your blinds, curtains, and shades, leading to allergies and other health issues. In this blog post, we’ll share some tips and tricks on how to clean your window treatments in a pet-friendly home and keep them looking their best.

Regular cleaning of your window treatments is essential in maintaining a healthy and comfortable home environment. Dust and dirt can accumulate on blinds, curtains, and shades, creating a breeding ground for allergens and other irritants. In a pet-friendly home, the problem is compounded by the presence of hair, dander, and follicles.

Cleaning your window treatments not only helps reduce allergens but also improves their appearance and lifespan.

Fur-Busting Timing

Pet dander, cat hair, and dog fur can all accumulate on window treatments, making them a breeding ground for allergens. In general, it’s recommended to dust or vacuum your window treatments as often as you clean your home, and deep cleaning should be done once a year.

If you only clean your home once a month, you might consider increasing frequency to every two weeks. Cleaning your home and keeping the blinds and window treatments wiped down can really help with allergies!

As a fellow allergy sufferer, I am certain of this!

Always check the manufacturer’s label for guidance on how to properly clean your window treatments. If you have machine washable treatments, take advantage of that option to keep your home as clean and pet-friendly as possible.

Pet-Friendly Tips for Keeping Your Window Coverings Clean

Window blinds can easily accumulate dust and pet hair, which can be particularly bothersome for allergy sufferers. However, with these simple steps, you can effectively clean your blinds while keeping your furry friends in mind.

Step 1: Put on gloves to protect your hands and use a vacuum with an upholstery attachment to remove loose dust and pet hair from the blinds.

Step 2: Gently dust the blinds with a feather duster to remove remaining dirt and dust.

Step 3: Fill a bucket with warm water and a small amount of mild soap or detergent. Dip your microfiber gloves into the soapy water and gently wipe down each individual slat of the blinds.

Step 4: For tough spots or stains, mix Epsom salt with a small amount of water to create a paste. Apply the paste to the spot and let it sit for a few minutes before wiping it away with a soft towel or sponge.

Step 5: Once all the slats have been cleaned, wipe them down again with a clean, damp microfiber glove or towel to remove any soap residue.

Step 6: Finally, spray a small amount of wood spray polish onto a clean microfiber glove or towel and wipe down the blinds to give them a nice shine.

Purrfect Pet-Friendly Cleaning Gloves

I recently found these microfiber dusting gloves, and I will say, I love them!

These gloves effectively pick up small dust particles and lock them in the soft fibers, preventing them from falling to the floor.

Made from thick, skin-friendly and breathable microfiber fabric, these gloves provide protection to your hands while cleaning, giving you a nice use experience.

Plus, they’re easy to clean – just use water or a little detergent after use. These house cleaning mittens are reusable, without any toxic substances, making them safe to use. You’ll receive 3 pairs of dust mittens, enough to meet all your cleaning needs.

These gloves make thoughtful gifts for new homeowners and are the purrfect helper for your daily housework. I loved them and they also have lots of promising reviews (which is why I felt good getting them).

I also like the gloves because if you have wood blinds, you should NOT be using water on them. Instead use these microfiber dusting gloves and a wood friendly spray polish. The polish is not even necessary all the time. You can simply wipe down the blinds ever week or two and then use a polish once a month or even once every two months.

By following these steps, you can keep your window coverings clean and free of pet hair and dust, which can make a big difference for allergy sufferers.
